AVIGNON , the Popes' City
( and ... le PONT d' AVIGNON! )
Situated on the banks of
the Rhône, it is the main City in the Vaucluse (90 000 inhabitants
) and has been the Popes' residence from 1309 to 1378 ( 7 successive
Popes resided there).
Who doesn't know the famous song : " Sur le pont, d'Avignon ;
on y danse ..."? It was built in 1177, and partially
damaged in the 17th Century.
Every year, Avignon becomes the world drama capital in
the Summer. The Festival was created in 1947 by Jean Vilar, and was
illuminated by the presence of Gérard Philippe. The " OFF"
Festival helps to attract an enormous crowd each year. If you
are seaking architectural emotion, cross the Place de l'Horloge, you will
be have a breathtaking view on the Palais des Papes !
